LAST OF THE BREED: THE P-51H
The North American P-51H was the last and fastest version of the famous P-51 Mustang.
The "H" Model weighted 40% less then a P-51D
and used a thinner wing, lighter in weight had a shorter 360 degree canopy, smaller landing gear legs and wheels.
The fuselage was 13 inches longer with a taller vertical fin, four bladed propeller
and was 50mph faster could climb to 30,000ft in 12 minutes maximum speed 487mph.
Armed with six fifty caliber machine guns
with 1880 rounds, 2x1,000lb bombs or rockets.
Was to late to see action in WWII, 555 were built and delivered to the post war USAF and
was phased out before the Korean War.
The P-51H was transferred to Air National Guard Units in the late 1940s early 1950s it was the only version of the mustang never to see combat action.
SURVIORS:
Five aircraft survive today, two in museums,
two are airworthy, one is under restoration.

Red stripe in bars of National Insignia date this as after Jan 1947.
