Arado Ar 196A-2 Deliveries started in November 1939. Bordfliegerstaffel 1./196 and 5./196 were the two units responsible for providing aircraft for naval vessels. The aircraft were deployed aboard major surface ships of the Kriegsmarine. Among the ships to receive the Ar 196's were Admiral Graf Spee, Scharnhorst, Gneisenau, Lutzow, Admiral Scheer and Prinz Eugen.

FACTORY CODE:

Arado Ar.196 code (GA+DX) W.Nr.0124, was used to make factory and propaganda photographs, the code was never used
any Bordfliegerstaffel.

After WWII captured examples were tested by the Allies, Bulgaria continued to operate the Ar.196 until retired in 1955. The USSR operated an Ar.196 for border patrols.
File photograph that shows an Ar.196 being off loaded from the German cruiser Prinz Eugen post-war the markings are bogus.
