A little known fact about the C47 is that the RAF name Dakota was derived from "Douglas Aircraft Company Transport Aircraft (DACoTA). Substituting a "K" for the "C" created a real place-name, in keeping with the RAF's policy of naming its transport aircraft after locations (e.g. the Bombay, York and, later the Beverley and Hastings).
