The P-38 was a great airplane, but it farbored some very nasty traits.
One was with the mid engine. Uthad some troubling stall characteristics that were not acceptable to the Army Air Corps during the war. Also the canon was mounted and fired through the propeller nose cone.

But, the Russians loved the airplane and received a bunch of them through the military lens/lease program.

Former astronaut and Eastern Airlines Chairman, Frank Bornan, owned a beautifully P-38 and flew it for many years.
