I won't doubt you David, but what I have read in the past, is that this was one of the modifications attempted to defeat the compressability problem encountered in a high speed dive. Wasn't successful, so, only one was made.

This was a one of a kind aircraft retained by Lockheed and modified with raised and lengthened tail-booms in a plan to mount Lightnings on floats for Pacific operations (S/N 41-1986).
