Wreck of USS Juneau Found

20 Mar 2018

In the evening of 12 Nov 1942, USS Juneau engaged in what would later be named First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, and suffered a torpedo hit early in the battle. On the next day, while sailing for Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides for repairs, she was intercepted by Japanese submarine I-26, which sank her with a torpedo. USS Helena and USS San Francisco, both also damaged from the previous night's battle, sailed on as further losses could not be risked, resulting in 687 deaths, a near total loss.

Paul Allen, who had funded several successful expeditions in search of sunken WW2 warships and had only two weeks ago found the wreck of USS Lexington, reported the discovery of USS Juneau's wreck. The discovery was dated 18 Mar 2018, although the initial sonar detection with the wreck was made on 17 Mar. The wreck was found at the depth of around 4.2 kilometers (2.6 miles).
