World War II Database

Unit 731, a unit of the WW2-era Japanese Army established for the purpose of the development of biological weapons, had long since been known for its human experimentation on thousands of unwilling and/or unknowing Chinese and Koreans. Katsuo Nishiyama, professor emeritus of Shiga University of Medical Science in Otsu, Japan near Kyoto led a three-year effort that ultimately led to the National Archives of Japan releasing the names and ranks, and other personal information of the 3,607 active members of Unit 731 as of 1 Jan 1945. Nishiyama commented that he "personally believes that Unit 731 has a collective responsibility to account for its war crimes, and that those crimes must be atoned for as a way of showing that those crimes will never be repeated."
