ww2dbaseMasato Nakae was born in Līhuʻe, Kauaʻi, US Territory of Hawaiʻi in Dec 1917 to Japanese immigrant parents. He enlisted in the US Army in Feb 1942 and volunteered to be part of the 100th Infantry Battalion, which was consisted of mostly Japanese-Americans. On 19 Aug 1944, Private Nakae was seriously wounded by a German mortar barrage near Pisa, Italy. Despite of his injuries, he remained in his position when German soldiers advanced after the barrage, and played a key part in ultimately halting that particular German advance. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross award for this action. He passed away in Sep 1998 and was buried at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, United States. His Distinguished Service Cross was upgraded to the Medal of Honor, which was posthumously presented by US President Bill Clinton to Nakae's daughter Anna Kuroda in Jun 2000.

21 Jun 2000 Mikio Hasemoto, Joe Hayashi, Kaoru Moto, Masato Nakae, Shinyei Nakamine, William Nakamura, James Okubo, Frank Ono, Kazuo Otani, Ted Tanouye, and Francis Wai's Distinguished Service Cross medals were posthumously upgraded to the Medal of Honor, and the medals were presented to surviving family members at a ceremony at the White House, Washington DC, United States.
