ww2dbaseNadejda Russo was born in Tver, Russia. Her family later relocated to Chisinau, Romania (now Moldova). She earned her pilot's license in 1936. In the following year, she purchased a Bücker Bü 131 trainer aircraft with funds given by the Romanian Air Ministry for further training. During WW2, she flew aircraft over hostile terrain with the all-women "White Squadron" of the Romanian Air Force, evacuating the wounded from the front lines. In 1941, she was awarded the Gold Cross of the Order of Aeronautical Virtue with Swords. In 1942, she was awarded the Order of the German Eagle, 3rd Class of Germany. In 1943, she was awarded the Order of the Queen Marie Cross. She passed away in Bucharest, Romania in 1988.
