ww2dbaseVictor Matthys was born in 1914. In 1936, he became the editor of the newspaper Le Pays Réel, published by the nationalist Rexist Party. In May 1941, he was made the director of propaganda for the party. In Jul 1941, he was made the acting party leader, succeeding Léon Degrelle who had temporarily resigned to serve in the German Waffen-SS organization. In this role, he ordered the execution of 20 civilians in Courcelles in central Belgium as reprisals for anti-German resistance activities; this order would ultimate lead to his downfall from power as criticisms surfaced. After the war, he was found guilty of treason and was executed in 1947.
