ww2dbaseKanemasa Akiyama was born in 1896. During WW2, he directed chemical weapons research projects in the Japanese Army. While the Unit 516 of the Japanese Kwantung Army in China was under his command between mid-1944 and Jul 1945, the notorious unit dumped large amounts of mustard gas, lewisite, and other chemicals into the Nen River at Qiqihar, Nenjiang Province, China, polluting the area for many decades to come. He passed away in 1976.

29 Nov 1896 Kanemasa Akiyama was born in Japan.
1 Aug 1939 Kanemasa Akiyama was named the Chief of Research Section of Narashino Chemical Warfare School in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
19 Jan 1940 Kanemasa Akiyama was attached to the staff of the Japanese Army Technical Research Institute.
15 Dec 1941 Kanemasa Akiyama was made the Chief of Research Section of the Chemical Warfare Section of the Japanese Kwantung Army in China.
20 Jun 1944 Major General Kanemasa Akiyama was named the commanding officer of Japanese Unit 516 chemical weapons research unit based in Qiqihar, Nenjiang Province, China, replacing Major General Yamawaki Masao.
28 Jul 1945 Kanemasa Akiyama was made the head of the Japanese 6th Army Technical Research Institute.
15 Feb 1976 Kanemasa Akiyama passed away.
