ww2dbaseGustaf V (Oscar Gustaf Adolf) was born in Drottningholm Palace to King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway. He was crowned the King of Sweden on 8 Dec 1907; the Norwegian throne had been separated from the dual monarchy in 1905. A German sympathizer during WW1, he continued to show friendship with Germany during the inter-war years, including after the rise of the Nazi Party. Under King Gustaf V's direction, Sweden supplied Germany with iron and steel in the beginning of the war and mobilized her own military; however, she remained neutral through the entire war. Toward the end of the war, Sweden was known to be a safe haven for Jews fleeing from German occupied Europe; Gustaf V was credited with sheltering over 200,000 Jews from German prosecution. He died in Drottningholm Palace in 1950.
