ww2dbaseAdmiral Goto participated in several of the major campaigns of the war, being commander of Cruiser Division 6 (Aoba, Furutaka, Kako, and Kinugasa). His ships supplied the bulk of the muscle Admiral Mikawa used to such good effect at the Battle of Savo Island. Goto was killed aboard the Aoba during the Battle of Cape Esperance, October 11-12, 1942.
