In 1940, its continental Allies fallen, Britain stood alone. The people of the United Kingdom banded together and thwarted the German efforts to even attempt an invasion. Royal Air Force fighter pilots emerged larger than life heroes. In With Wings Like Eagles, author Michael Korda explored the history of the Battle of Britain, starting from Stanley Baldwin and Neville Chamberlain's role in the inter-war era building of British air defenses, through Hugh Dowding's wise strategy, to the sacrifices of the young pilots who flew the famed Spitfire and Hurricane fighters. Although after several titles about the Battle of Britain I found little new information, Korda's wonderful narration kept my attention. His description of the human cost of the victory was perhaps the most harrowing, reminding us that there was no glory in war, even for the victor.
I had reviewed this title in its audio book format. Much like he had done in Ben Macintyre's Operation Mincemeat, John Lee did a great job with his reading. Once again, I somehow found his pronunciation of "leftenent" really enjoyable.
With Wings Like Eagles was a great book. I had enjoyed it greatly and I believe WW2DB visitors would as well.
