Focused on the defense-related organizations operating within the United States, The US Home Front 1941-45 provides excellent detail for groups such as the Public Health Service, Women's Airforce Service Pilots, Office of Civilian Defense, etc. A brief history is given for each group, even if the roots had taken place prior to WW2. An interesting detail for many of the groups is the description of typical uniforms. For example,

[e]arly in the war the only uniformed representatives of the [United Service Organization] were the Salvation Army. Salvation Army Representatives always worked in a trim gray uniform of lightweight serge with matching hat; the collar bore a strip of blue felt, resembling a British officer's gorget patch, bearing a silver "S" and the rank insignia of the wearer. Women wore a greay silk blouse, navy-blue tie, off-black or gunmetal hose and bloack shoes. The overseas cap had a red cord piping and a rank insignia pinned to the wearer's left side.

Such detailed description of uniforms can be found for many of the service groups.

Because of the author Alejandro de Quesada's expertise in the history of the American state of Florida, a small number of war-time photographs taken in Florida can be found in the book, which can be a new treat for many readers. For example, the page 18 photograph of Florida Defense Force men training with rifles, now in the collection of the Pinellas County Historical Commission, is a photograph that I have no yet seen before.

The back cover of The US Home Front 1941-45 noted that many of the organizations presented in the book are "quite forgotten since 1945". This effort of Alejandro de Quesada's is a rather good attempt at passing on the history of these auxiliary, patriotic, humanitarian, and other war-time organizations in the United States during the WW2 era.
