ww2dbaseArgonauta-class submarine Jantina was laid down in 1930, launched in 1932, and completed in 1933. During a 15-day long patrol off Barcelona, Spain in Aug 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, she attacked a Spanish Republican destroyer with torpedoes, but both had missed. Jantina was lost in the Aegean Sea in 1941 during WW2 in an unusual submarine vs. submarine confrontation in which she was torpedoed and sunk by HMS Torbay. Only 6 of the 48 aboard survived the sinking and swam to the Greek island of Delos. In Nov 2021, her wreckage was discovered at the depth of 103 meters (338 feet) by a team led by Kostas Thoctarides, using a remotely operated underwater vehicle. The identity of the wreckage was confirmed by the Italian Naval History Office.

"With Germany arming at breakneck speed, England lost in a pacifist dream, France corrupt and torn by dissension, America remote and indifferent... do you not tremble for your children?"
