Type 3 Ho-Ni III

ManufacturerHitachi Limited
Primary RoleTank Destroyer

ww2dbaseThe Type 3 Ho-Ni III gun tanks were built on top of the hulls of Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tanks and featured a fully-enclosed casemate for the main gun, which was a major improve from their predecessors Type 1 Ho-Ni I and Type 2 Ho-I gun tanks. The casemate was fully rotating, thus theoretically giving the crews greater flexibility in combat situations. Due to lack of raw materials, only 31 or 41 units were built by Hitachi Limited between early 1944 and the end of the war. Most, if not all, of them were stationed in the Japanese home islands in preparation for the Allied invasion that never took place. There is no record of Allied forces encountering Type 3 Ho-Ni III gun tanks in combat.
