ww2dbaseThe Sergei Mironovich Kirov (or SMK for short) heavy tank design was developed by Josef Kotin of Kirov Factory No. 100 in Leningrad, Russia. The prototype vehicle was completed in 1939, and it competed against Kliment Voroshilov (KV) and T-100 heavy tanks; the KV design was also developed by Kotin. It had two turrets, with the primary 76.2-millimeter gun in the main turret and the smaller 45-millimeter gun in the forward turret. One SMK, two KV-1, and two T-100 prototype tanks were put on the front lines in combat during the Winter War. The SMK prototype was disabled by a land mine and was temporarily abandoned. Ultimately, The KV design was chosen for production.
