ww2dbaseThe Cannone da 149/40 heavy guns were designed to replace the aging Cannone da 149/35 A guns in the Italian Army arsenal, but by Oct 1941, only about 50 were in service, thus they served side-by-side during the war. The overall design was fairly modern, but the use of trail spade plates that had to be hammered into the ground was somewhat odd. After the Italian capitulation in 1943, the German Army captured some of the surviving pieces and pressed them into service under the designation of 15 cm K 408(i). In Apr 1944, Ansaldo, the firm that originally manufactured the weapon, produced an additional batch of 12 guns for German use.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase
