ww2dbaseThe 37-millimeter Spade Mortars were introduced to the Soviet military in 1939. Their design was unique in that these weapons were intended to be carried by all infantrymen, and their function was also unique in that the base plates could be used as spades for digging trenches. They saw action during the Winter War in 1939-1940 and the initial phase of the Russo-German War in 1941, and general opinion of the performance of these mortars were low across both campaigns. Production ceased in 1941. A number of them were captured by German forces in the early phases of the Russo-German War in 1941; some of them were pressed into German service under the designation "3.7 cm Spatengranatwerfer 161(r)".
