ww2dbaseThe BL 9.2-inch Mk X naval and coastal defense guns entered service in 1900, upgraded from the Mk IX predecessor design by having single-motion breech and improved rifling. In 1908, the Mk XI successor design was completed, but it never successfully worked out its flaws, and thus in 1920 the Mk XI project was canceled and the Mk X design remained in service with the British Royal Navy. By WW2, many of them were still in place at naval fortifications in Britain, British Commonwealth nations, and British colonies, usually deployed in batteries of two to three guns each. In older barbette mountings, they had the a maximum range of about 20 kilometers; by 1939, some of the more important ports had their coastal artillery mountings upgraded to more modern mountings that increased the range to upwards of 36 kilometers. They defended ports such as Dover and Plymouth in Britain, Halifax in Canada, Gibraltar, Valleta in Malta, Cape Town and Simonstown in South Africa, Colombo and Trincomalee in Ceylon, Singapore, Hong Kong, Fremantle and Sydney and Australia, Auckland and Wellington in New Zealand, and others. After the war, they were generally retired from British, British Commonwealth, and British colonial services by 1950. Several examples were transferred to Portugal and Turkey in the 1950s.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
