ww2dbaseBetween 1938 and 1939, the Japanese Army tested the Experimental Type 97 47-millimeter anti-tank gun, and thought the results promising. After some enhancements to the design, the Type 1 47-millimeter anti-tank guns were placed into production at the Osaka Arsenal in Japan and the first gun entered service in 1942. This design was Japan's first completely indigenously developed anti-tank gun. They were light, had low profiles, and could fire either the Type 1 armor-piercing rounds or the Type 1 high explosive rounds. They were largely assigned to China and Burma, and they first saw combat in 1943; while effective against Chinese armored cars and light tanks, they were generally too weak to penetrate the armor of Allied medium tanks.

Type 1 47-millimeter guns were also used as the main armament of the Type 97 Chi-Ha Shinhoto tanks.

About 2,300 examples were built during the design's production life.
