ww2dbaseType 94 90-millimeter infantry mortars were introduced into Japanese Army service in 1935. These smooth bore mortars were designed to fill the shoes of light field artillery when, for whatever reason, light field artillery could not assist infantry units, thus they designed to fire heavier projectiles, which necessitated a heavy duty recoil system and heavy base plates and bipods. They saw action in China very shortly after their introduction, and they were later deployed across all theaters of WW2, including dense jungle islands in the Pacific Ocean.Source: Wikipedia ww2dbase
