ww2dbaseThe Lanchester submachine gun (sometimes "Lanchester machine carbine") was designed by George H. Lanchester of the Sterling Armament Company to fill British Admiralty and Royal Air Force's joint need for submachine guns for port and airfield defense. Because the need was so urgent, the design was actually almost a direct copy of the German MP28 submachine gun, reverse engineered from captured examples. In 1941, the Admiralty placed these weapons into service. These weapons were very heavy. They had heavy wooden butt and stock structures, and had steel action and breech blocks and solid brass magazine housings. There were two variants, Mk.1 and Mk.1*; the former had a firing mode selector, while the latter could only be fired in full automatic mode. The Lanchester submachine gun saw service with the Royal Navy throughout WW2 and remained in service until the 1960s.Source: Wikipedia. ww2dbase
