- The city of Newark, New Jersey, United States dispatched two aging fireboats, Michael P. Duffy and William T. Brennan, to block the entrance of Newark Bay. The city administration, which had already embarked on a costly beautification program, did not wish to play host to the scrapping of a battleship.
