  • With the capture of Bilbao and Santander the only remaining Spanish Republican stronghold in the north of Spain was Gij√≥n and its surrounding area. The Spanish Nationalists, led by Generals Antonio Aranda and Jos√© Solchaga, launched an offensive through the mountains of Leon and along the coast from the east to capture Gij√≥n.
