  • Joseph Stalin ordered the deportation of over 115,000 Meskhetian Turks from southern Georgia to Central Asia. Somewhere between 30,000 to 50,000 deportees would die of starvation during transit. No reason was given for the deportation; historians speculated that it was part of Stalin's preparations against a possible war with Turkey some time in the future. ww2dbase [CPC]
