- The Luftwaffe fighter ace Walter Nowotny was born in Gmünd, Austria. The youngest of three sons of an Austrian railway official, during the war he would be credited with no less than 258 aerial victories and commanded the world's first jet fighter wing. ww2dbase [Gmünd | AC]
