ww2dbaseLosey Field, named after Captain Robert M. Losey, was established by the US Army Air Corps in 1941 on the southern coast of Puerto Rico, an American colony. It was used by both fighter and bomber squadrons of the US Army during the war. It ceased to be an active airfield in 1944 when the German threat in the western Atlantic was largely eliminated; the last unit to be stationed there was USAAF's 417th Bombardment Squadron of 25th Bombardment Group. In 1950, the US Army renamed it Camp Losey. The base was later transferred to the Puerto Rico National Guard, which at the time of this writing continues to operate the facility for training purposes under the name of Fort Allen.
