Cdr Steichen (later Capt Steichen) was the Director of the US Navy's Photographic Unit and took many of the most notable war photos himself. In 1945, he edited the pile of photos taken by his unit down to the 100 that told the story the best and he put those in a book titled "US Navy War Photographs – Pearl Harbor to Tokyo Bay." This book was made available to all sailors upon their discharge – 6,000,000 copies in all that sold at the rate of 1,000,000 a month until sold out. Many of the images from this book can be seen on this site and a review of this book is available on this site as well.
