ANTI-AIRCRAFT ARTILLERY: THE OLD STANDBY THE
BROWNING .50 CALIBER MACHINE GUN
The Browning M1921A1 was crewed by three men
Gunner, Assistant Gunner/Ammo Handler and
Water Chest Operator.
The Water Chest Operator kept the weapon from overheating the water jacket surrounded the barrel, that was connected w/hoses to a
eight gallon water chest.
One or two men could operate the weapon if
necessary. The object at the barrels end, is
called the thread protector muzzle used to protect end of water jacket.
The other men in the photograph are armed with Springfield M1903,.30-06 Bolt-Action Rifles.
Feed system, 5 round stripper clip loaded into the internal box magazine, rate of fire
15 rounds per minute.
