Col Bernstein was the deputy chief of the Financial Branch at SHAEF (G-5). G-5 handled the recovery of the gold and currency found at Merkers while the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives unit (the Monuments Men) handled the recovery of the art. The man leaning in between Gen Eddy and Gen Bradley in the darker overcoat is a civilian war correspondent.
