I think you’re right. After checking the things you listed and some other nuances of the B-17 types, I think this aircraft is clearly not an E model and almost certainly a C model, as you said. The caption has been changed to reflect this and thank you for bringing this up.

It's a C model. Notice the gunners "bathtub" compartment below. The D had cowl flaps on engines and the E was equipped with a tail gunner and ball turret gunner, and had the very same similar fuselage as the F & G models, only it had the early nose of the B,C, and D models. Notice no tail gun or ball turret.
