Boeing B-17 43-38172 of the 398th Bomb Group damaged on bombing mission over Cologne, Germany October 15, 1944.

Pilot 1st Lt. Lawrence DeLancy brought the fort back to Nuthampstead, England.
The bombardier George Abbott was killed, but through all that damage and wind blast his chair still stands up right.

Most B-17 pilots were twenty or twenty two year olds, that three years earlier were soda jerks, car hops, high and college students, many of whom never saw a airplane or flew in one.
The pilot fought for control against drag and cold to return to base, this says alot
for their training and courage.

It both saddens me that someone died but also amazes me that the plane made it back with that sort of damage. The "Flying Fortress" truly earned it's name.
