LtCdr Hill was a class of 1931 graduate of the Naval Academy, a Nicholas plank-owner, and her first executive officer before being elevated to commanding officer. He would earn two Navy Crosses, one Silver Star, and one Legion of Merit while commanding USS Nicholas. He retired as a Rear Admiral and as a retired Rear Admiral, he travelled to Hawaii for Nicholas’s final decommissioning in 1970. He arranged for Nicholas’s ship’s bell to be placed on permanent display at the Marine Barracks in Washington, DC.
