A week later, these ships would depart with Task Force 58 for strikes against Japan. This photograph was taken by the ship’s photographer aboard USS Astoria (Cleveland-class). The carrier at left is identified by some sources as the Lexington (Essex-class) but Lexington was berthed almost 5,000 yards away, about two miles to the right and slightly behind the photographer. The small wake in the center is probably an LCVP and directly beyond the LCVP on the horizon is a battleship, probably USS Wisconsin. On the horizon to the right of Hornet is one of Ulithi’s small islands, probably Potangeras.
