The boxes marked Hercules Powder are ammunition cases. Hercules Powder was one of the largest manufacturers of gunpowder in the US, not just in WWII but throughout the 20th century.

Love your site. Another suggestion: the jeep was offloaded from a landing "craft" such as an LCVP (landing craft vehicle personnel)or an LCM (landing craft mechanized otherwise called a tank lighter). Improper to use the term "barge."
