ww2dbaseSamuel Power Jenkins graduated from the US Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, United States in 1915. He became the first commanding officer of light cruiser USS Atlanta on 24 Dec 1941, and under his command the ship saw action in the Solomon Islands. During the First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in Nov 1942, USS Atlanta was struck by one or two torpedo hits, rendering her dead in the water within minutes of the start of the engagement. Jenkins directed an efficient evacuation of the ship, and, after he had been taken off by tug boat Bobolink, stopped the eager Bobolink gunners from machine-gunning Japanese survivors floating in the water. For his leadership during this engagement, he was later awarded the Navy Cross medal. He retired at the rank of rear admiral after the war, and passed away in 1975.
