ww2dbaseJacques Leroy was born in Binche, Henegouwen (French: Hainaut) Province, Belgium in 1924. During the war, he volunteered for German military service and was assigned to the Waffen-SS as a member of 69th Panzer Granadier Regiment of 28th SS Volunteer Grenadier Division Wallonien. He was promoted to the rank of SS-Sturmmann in Nov 1943 and was awarded the Iron Cross medal in 1944. On 20 Apr 1945, he was promoted the rank of SS-UntersturmfÃ¼hrer and was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross while fighting against Soviet forces deep within German borders. In the fray of the final days of the war, however, no written record survived of such an award. Fellow war time German collaborator and former commanding officer of the division, LÃ©on Degrelle, confirmed the award in 1973 while in Spain. Leroy passed away in Siegsdorf in southern Germany in 1996.
