Z37 was one of 17 Narvik-class destroyers, the most powerful destroyers in the world, virtually light cruiser. But they lacked range and trhe twin bow turrets, replacing earlier single mounts, handicapped them in heavy sea. In late December,1943, Z37 (Korvettenkapitän Langheld) was damaged in the three-hour Battle of the Bay of Biscay where eleven German destroyers and torpedo boats were defeated by the Royal Navy cruisers HMS Glasgow and HMS Enterprise. Z37 was eventually scuttled at Bordeaux on 24 August 1944.
