- Gato-class submarine USS Silversides torpedoed Japanese transports Hōraisan Maru and Shōken Maru 40 miles west of Anatahan, Mariana Islands. Both ships exploded and burned with tremendously bright flames and lit up the night as if it were day. ww2dbase [Silversides | Anatahan | DS]
