Puerto Rico
  • A USAAF C-39 aircraft took off from Borinquen Field in northwestern Puerto Rico at 0800 hours, landing at Losey Field in southern Puerto Rico at about 0845, picking up additional passengers. It then took off for San Juan, Puerto Rico. En route, weather caused poor visibility, causing aircraft to crash into a mountain in the center of the island northwest of Coamo at between 0915 and 0930 hours. 22 were killed: Captain Francis H. Durant (pilot), Lieutenant James P. Robers (co-pilot), Corporal James M. Conrad (crew), Private Roy A. Alpine (crew), Major Roland Kohr, 1st Lieutenant Lawrence Camp, 1st Lieutenant Donald Bashaw, 2nd Lieutenant George Beach, Captain Jack I. Smith, Captain Raymond C. Stiles, 1st Lieutenant Alexis Voroniesk, 1st Lieutenant Everett F. Johnson, 1st Lieutenant Pascasio Chacon Quinones, Warrant Officer (jg) Allen Brewer, Sergeant Hardy Hocking, Sergeant Thomas F. Burke, Jr., Sergeant Jesse Casarez, Private Irving Hyfer, Boatswains Mate 1st Class John Larimore, Dorothy J. Van Zant, Margarita M. Ortiz, and Marie Tholen. ww2dbase [Losey Field | Coamo | CPC]
