- The 4,305-ton Belfast-Liverpool ferry boat Munster, owned by Coast Lines Ltd Liverpool, with 45 crew and 190 passengers on board, as well as cargoes of food stuffs and textiles, triggered a magnetic mine (laid by German submarine U-30 (Kapitänleutnant Fritz-Julius Lemp) on 6 Jan 1940) in the Queen's Channel northwest of the Mersey Light at 0600 hours.
