- Japanese forces in the Manchuria region of northeastern China surrendered. In the two-week campaign, the Japanese had lost 80,000 killed and wounded and 54,000 taken prisoner, including 143 generals. - The Yugoslavian parliament decreed that all arable land over 75 acres would be taken over by the state and be given to former partisan and wounded soldiers. ww2dbase [AC]
- USS Pompon departed Guam, Mariana Islands. ww2dbase [Pompon | CPC]
- Indonesia announced the formation of its army, known as the Badan Keamanan Rakjat, or the People's Security Organization. The Partai Nasional Indonesia was also established on this date as a state party, with Sukarno as its Great Leader, Mohammad Hatta as its Deputy Great Leader, and Sartono as its Head. ww2dbase [CPC]
- French Commissioner Pierre Messmer for Tonkin, French Indochina was parachuted north of Hanoi, but was captured by Viet Minh troops; he would soon be rescued by Chinese troops. Meanwhile, Jean Sainteny, another French colonial administrator, flew into Hanoi aboard an American aircraft from Chongqing, China. On the same day, Commissioner Jean Cédile for Cochinchine was parachuted 85 kilometers northwest of Saigon, and was captured and humiliated by local farmers; he and his team was rescued by Japanese troops. Finally, in Thai Nguyen, Tonkin, the Japanese personnel which had been previously besieged by Viet Minh were freed after the communists withdrew to handle the arrival of French colonial administrators. ww2dbase [Hanoi, Tonkin | CPC]
- USS Haddock arrived at Pearl Harbor, US Territory of Hawaii, ending her twelfth war patrol. ww2dbase [Pearl Harbor Navy Base and Ford Island Naval Air Station | Haddock | Honolulu, Oahu | CPC]
- Japanese troops at Mui Wo, Lantau Island, Hong Kong arrested and executed civilians Lam Tsah and Lam Kuan in retaliation of an attack on Japanese troops on 19 Aug 1945. Company commander Yasuo Kishi personally executed Lam Kuan. ww2dbase [Lantau | CPC]
- Japanese troops began to withdraw from larger towns in British Malaya. Since British colonial administration had not yet returned, this created a situation of anarchy. Malay-Chinese ethnic violence escalated in some of these towns as the result. ww2dbase [CPC]
- USS Ancon made rendezvous with US 3rd Fleet and set course for Tokyo Bay, Japan. ww2dbase [Ancon | CPC]
