ww2dbaseWalter Stettner von Grabenhofen saw action in the invasions of Poland, France, and Yugoslavia. In Dec 1942, he was made the commanding officer of German 1st Mountain Division, which was posted in Greece on anti-partisan duty. Two years later, he was killed by Yugoslavian partisan fighters in the Montenegro region. Under his command, 1st Mountain Division committed many atrocities, such as the massacre of 107 inhabitants of the village of Borova in Albania on 6 Jul 1943 and the execution of many surrendered soldiers of Italian 33rd Mountain Infantry Division "Acqui" at Cephalonia, Greece in Sep 1943. Stettner von Grabenhofen was buried in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, southern Germany.

He was not killed in Montenegro. He was killed on Avala mountain during the liberation of Belgrade in WW II
