Bermuda Conference
Contributor: C. Peter Chen
As Jewish groups in both United States and the United Kingdom demanded their governments to arrive at potential solutions to help the Jews currently living under German occupation, the two governments met together at Hamilton, Bermuda on 19 Apr 1943 to discuss this topic. The American presentation was led by Princeton University President Dr. Harold W. Dodds. When the conference ended, no concrete action plan was formulated. Shortly after the conference the American Zionist Committee for a Jewish Army ran an advertisement in the newspaper New York Times condemning the poor efforts to help the Jewish people under Nazi rule in Europe. Perceiving the advertisement as an insult to the American government, US Senator Harry Truman withdrew his membership from the American Zionist Committee for a Jewish Army in protest.
