ww2dbaseJean Benoit Guillaume Robert Antoine Louis Marie Adolphe Marc d'Aviano was born to Grand Duchess Charlotte. During the Luxembourg government's time of exile in London, he joined the British Army as a volunteer in the Irish Guards, was commissioned a lieutenant in 1943 and captain in 1944. On 11 Jun 1944, he arrived in France via the Normandy beaches, and participated in the battle for Caen and Brussels. On 10 Sep 1944, he was among the men who marched into Luxembourg to liberate that nation. After the war, even after his coronation as Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg on 12 Nov 1964, he remained his status as a member of the British Army, at the rank of colonel, with the Regiment of the Irish Guards. He abdicated on 7 Oct 2000, yielding the throne to his son Henri.
