The soldier on the armored car and reaching down to shake hands is my father Ancel Lee Casey. He was in the 11th Armored Division.

This photograph is incorrectly labeled. This image records the meeting of 1st & 3rd Armies at the Ourthe river bridge on 16 Jan. '45. The shoulder emblems worn by the standing soldiers is from the 84ID (Railsplitters), meeting soldiers from 11AD (3rd Army).

The M8 armored car is from the 41st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron (Mechanized), 11th Armored Division, Third Army. The picture was significant because it was the link up of the Third and First Armies in the vicinity of Houffalize that signified the closing of the Bulge. At this point, the front lines had returned to roughly where they were one month earlier on 15 December when the Ardennes offensive began. The picture is definitely not Noville as that was the retaken by the 101st Airborne Division, much further south from this picture's location.
