POST WAR FORMATION: LAST OF THE FLY-BYS

After WWII the US Navy continued to operate a number of WWII aircraft, by the 1960s most of its wartime propeller-driven aircraft had been phased out of service. New jet and turbo-prop aircraft were taking their place, as the US Navy entered the jet age.

PB4Y-1:
Naval version of the B-24 Liberator aircraft was phased out of service by 1956.

SNB-2P:
Light Transport based on the civilian Model
Beechcraft 18. Retired from US Navy in 1972.

F4U-5P:
Corsair Long-Range Reconnaissance Fighter, US Navy/Marines phased out of front-line service 1953/54 reserves by 1960.

F6F-5P:
Hellcat Photo-Reconnaissance version of the F6F-3 and F6F-5 Hellcat retired from front-line service with US Navy/Marines phased out of service with reserves by 1960.

F8F-2P:
Bearcat Photo-Reconnaissance version retired from front-line service 1952, phased out by 1957 and reserves by 1960.

F9F-2P:
Panther Reconnaissance version retired 1957
from front-line Navy service, retired from the US Marines in 1958 continued to serve with reserve units until early 1960s phased out of service.

F2H-2P:
Banshee Photo-Reconnaissance version served
with US Navy/Marines retired from front-line service 1959/1960.

PB4Y-2:

This patrol bomber continued to serve with the US Navy until late 1950s, the US Coast Guard operated
the PB4Y-2s until 1958.

PBY:

The Catalina served with the US Navy, Reserves and Coast Guard retired in 1957.

PBM:

The Mariner was a four-engine flying boat used for patrol and air-sea rescue retired from US Navy service in 1958. The Martin Mars was another four-engine flying boat was operated by the Navy as a transport retired in 1956.

P5M:

The Marlin was used for patrol and air-sea rescue retired in 1960.

UNSUNG HEROES: AMPHIBIAN AIRCRAFT

J2F:

The Grumman Duck operated as air-sea rescue by the US Air Force, Navy and Coast Guard retired by mid 1950s.

The Grumman G-73 Mallard, Grumman J3F Goose and Grumman J4F Widgeon served with the US Navy and Coast Guard as air-sea rescue aircraft were retired by late 1950s early 1960s
