While "insecure egomaniac" would certainly apply to Charles de Gaulle it in no way could be applied to Henri Giraud. Giraud had more courage and soldiers heart in his little finger than de Gaulle had in his entire 6 foot 5 inch frame.

Giraud was pretty tall too! Captured twice by the Germans and escaped twice. Pretty cool.

This is a famous and pivotal photo. Giraud and de Gaulle did not like each other. They were both insecure egomaniacs vying for position as the undisputed French leader. Roosevelt insisted on this photo and de Gaulle resented it for the rest of his life. He saw being told to shake hands like a couple of quarreling school-kids as a personal insult. As a result of this handshake, this was the last time de Gaulle submitted to any request of any kind from any American president.
